The project for Studio Soto consists of modular wooden tubes that are cut and “twisted” to fit a particular space. The premise of this work is that the form is derived from the interaction with the environment. The site is recorded in the sculpture as cuts, bends and twists of the wood. The history of the current site is carried forward to the next site and is a continuous process of change. The ultimate form, if one truly exists, is acquired both by the relationship of the work to the space and the memory of the previous locations. Much like people acquire knowledge and understanding through our experiences moving through the world, the form of this sculpture is always changing and adapting to a new environment.

bio:

After receiving two degrees in painting, Tim decided he was ready to begin sculpting. “I was tired of the illusion, composition, mediums, yada, yada, yada. I needed to stretch wings not canvas. Besides, all my friends were doing it.” Since his epiphany, Tim has placed his sculptures in the windows of Avery Street, the galleries of Montserrat College of Art, Clark University, Mass College of Art and even in the remote burough of Brooklyn, NY. He received a little money from the good people at the Berkshire Taconic Fund. That, along with an occasional pat on the back from his good buddies at Midway Studios and the neighborhood of Fort Point (where he has been trapped for the past sixteen years) Tim leads a happy, fulfilled, yet humble life.
